Brazil's Brown Water Hospital Ships

by Christopher Albon on December 10, 2008

Picture 3.pngThe US Navy and China are not the only states with hospital ships:

The Brazilian Navy boasts an innovative and well-developed program of small hospital ships, which ply the river. With shallow drafts, they can move up the hundreds of tributary rivers and provide medical care to the people in the interior of the vast Amazon region.

We had some TNI (Indonesia military) medical and medical service sorps officers with us this past summer aboard USNS MERCY, and they were gathering all the lessons they could to apply to the two hospital ships they are bringing online. Given that they have some 7,000 inhabited islands, there plans were primarily domestic.

During Unified Assistance (Banda Aceh post-tsunami) the TNI were not real cooperative (from my worm’s eye view). Three years later one of my best friends during Pacific Partnership ‘08 was the TNI environmental health officer. Pleasant development.

Wow, I should not post until I’ve got a cup’o'joe onboard. Please excuse the third-grade spelling!

Good observation TEJ. I need to do more research on the TNI hospital ships.

Nice looking vessels. I would love to see them in action. I wonder what modifications were conducted.
