Sexual violence is, and has long been, a brutal feature of conflict in the Congo. The number of news, reports, research, and monographs on the tragedy extends into the thousands. However, this week I stumbled onto something unique, at least to me: a video clip of former Mai Mai fighters describing in their own words why they raped.
I do not know the source of this video and while normally I avoid publishing video when I cannot give proper credit, in this case I am making an exception. Friend of the blog Laura Seay points out that the clip comes from Lisa Jackson’s documentary, The Greatest Silence.
